Mammography vs ultrasound for diagnosis of breast lump |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: There was a small mass on my managram and i am 74 and had a hysterectomy in 1997. there is no breast cancer in my family. they want me to do a ultrasound but i would like to repeat the managram. what is your opinion? Dear Janene: Mammography sensitivity for breast cancer declines significantly with increasing breast density. Usually in women with dense breasts ultrasound is preferred and it is also an accepted method of choice for the differentiation of cysts from solid masses. It may be beneficial to choose ultrasound over a repeat mammogram for a clearer assessment of the mass.
