Breast lump and its chances to turn into cancer

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 20 years old, and i had an operation for a lump removal last year but now i have two on separate breast. Do i have to be worried about breast cancer?
Dear Sine: The risk for breast cancer depends on the diagnosis, type of lump, its pathology report after removal, positive family history and many other factors. Your treating doctor is the best person to discuss your risk for cancer. However, if the lump was diagnosed to be a fibroadenoma (seems likely from your discription of the lump), it is usually benign and can be removed or even left in place. There are very rare chances of fibroadenoma to turn cancerous, thus regular testing and follow up with your doctor is a must for the early diagnosis of the changes (if any) and treatment.
