Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 53 year old female. I just went for a mammogram and ultrasound because I have a small cyst on the areola near the nipple. The radiologist suggested I come back in three months for another ultrasound. What am I waiting for in 3 months? Should I go to a breast surgeon now to have a biopsy? and at the time of the biopsy can they remove the cyst if it is benign?
Dear Barbara: The small cyst formed on the areola may be a benign breast condition or an enlarged duct that sometimes develop with the approaching menopause. Clinical examination and diagnosis by a breast surgeon is definitely important for an early, accurate treatment. It could be possible to remove the cyst entirely to cure the condition. However your doctor may provide you with better treatment options, based on the type of tumour, its stage, your age etc.
