Likelihood of my breast cysts to become cancerous.

Dear Ask The Doctor: My sister (49 years old) was just diagnosed with breast cancer. There is no other history of cancer in my family. I am 57 years old and there was an abnormality in my recent mammogram. After doing an ultrasound the radiologist said that there were many cysts in my left breast. I have had cysts in the past which were benign. Is it likely I have cancer?
Dear Despina: Cysts are very common and rarely turn into cancers. Ultrasound may identify the lumps to be either cystic or solid. Thus if your ultrasound test results confirm cysts to be present it is less likely for them to become cancerous. However a regular follow up with your doctor and routine mammogram is important in any case, since given positive history of breast cancer in your sister, you do need to be careful.
