Dear Ask The Doctor: Good evening!I'm a 34 years old woman and I just fineshed radiation treatment for breast cancer 3 weeks ago... I was wondering if it would be ok to get a tiny tattoo on my left shoulder.Would it be dangerous in any way? Thank you.
There is no contrainidication to have a tattoo after radiation treatment. However, bear in mind that tattoos may have adverse reactions when one undergoes an MRI procedure. MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging; in other words it involves magnetic force. Most inks being used for tattoos have a metal ingredient (e.g. iron oxide). Ergo, magnet attracts metal. It has been reported that some individuals with tattoos and had MRI experienced a burning sensation on the tattooed area; others would feel a tug (being pulled). Some doctors would recommend removal of the tattoo before an MRI is done and it will end up delaying the procedure. It is very possible for you to have an MRI in the future maybe for ruling out of metastasis (spreading out of cancer), or perhaps any other medical indication. It is not dangerous to get a tattoo after radiation treatment however you should also contemplate more if it is really worth it. I do hope I have answered your question and I wish you well always. |
