Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 16 years old and am experiencing quite horrifc pain in my left breast. It is only in that breast and never in the other. It isn't there all the time but I don't have very much time completely pain free. The pain is towards the top of my breast and futher to the left. There is nothing visible to see and I don't think I can feel a lump but there are so many weird things I can feel. I may be getting paranoid but I'm quite worried. I've tried all I can find as advice on the internet such as wearing support bra's and eating less salt. Nothing is working. I don't want to go through the embarrassement of going to the doctor unnecessarly as no one has ever seen my breasts as they are before. Do you have any advice on what I can do please or is it inevitable that I have to go to the doctor?
Dear Katherine: Breast tenderness is a common feature in premenstrual syndrome. Usually the level of estrogen reaches a peak in the mid cycle and the progesterone levels go up during the end of the cycle. The rise of progesterone causes increase in the breast size and may present with pain. The breast tissue has a rough texture which is what you must have felt.
Good diet, nutrition and exercise will help better regulate the hormones and help to decrease the symptoms. Avoiding certain foods like tea, coffee and chocolates may help in certain individuals. You may have to visit your doctor if you notice a lump or the pain becomes unbearable. |
