Dear Ask The Doctor: My mum just got told that she might have Breast Cancer. I know that you can die from it, but i want to know what percentage of women aged 40-50 die from it. I just want to be emotionally prepared for any news that comes so that i can be there for my mum.
Dear Anonymous: The diagnosis of breast cancer in a family member is always heartbreaking and there is a lot of anxiety due to the uncertain nature of the disease. Breast cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cause of cancer in women. An estimated 1 out of every 8 women has the risk of developing breast cancer. It is very difficult to tell the outcome of the disease. Prognosis depends on the size of the tumor, whether the lymph nodes are involved or not and whether the cancer has spread to other organs.
If the tumor is less than 1cm and there is no lymph node involvement, there is 90% chances of a 10 year disease free survival, but if the tumor is larger and more than four lymph nodes are involved only 15% 10 year survival if no treatment is given. Usually 1 in every 4 women with breast cancer succumb to the disease. |
