Mucus Filled!

Dear Ask The Doctor: Is coughing up pink mucus something to be concerned about? i have been sick for bout a week and been coughing up the pink stuff for about 2 days. Yes I am a smoker.

I understand your concern about pink mucous; having this condition for a week especially if you are a smoker might grant a visit to the doctor.

Pink mucous can be caused by an increase in a subtype of white blood cells that might be related to inflammation. I would suggest you to have a more detailed evaluation with some x rays and probable sputum culture. In the meantime try to avoid irritants especially smoking and drink plenty of fluids to try to clear your lungs.
