Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been spotting since I got on the Depo shot three weeks ago, which I know is normal. But I bleed very heavily the other day during and after intercourse. (this was just over two weeks after getting the Depo shot) and now I am bruising really easy. I have bruises up and down my legs and I have not hit anything. I also have a few small ones on my arms. Could this be a concern from the Depo. I have used the shot in the past for a total of about 10 years with no problems.
Dear Sarah:Depo-provera use is associated with menstrual irregularities including irregular bleeding, absence of periods, heavy periods or painful periods. However it is contraindicated in undiagnosed vaginal bleeding. It has been associated with inflammation of the walls of the vagina, abnormal cervical smear, vaginal bleeding and vaginal infections in 1 – 5% of patients. It has also been rarely associated in <1% of patients with abnormal blood constituents, which may manifest as bleeding or spontaneous bruising. I would advise attending your family physician for a detailed history of your symptoms, physical examination and routine blood tests to exclude this rare medication side-effect. |
