Dear Ask The Doctor: I've been having bruising on the outer side of my right thigh for months now and I don't know where they're coming from. It doesn't hurt. They are always in the same place and the same long narrow shape. I was wondering what would cause this or if this is something to be worried about.
Dear Jessi:Bruising is a common finding secondary to trauma. The trauma results in disruption of the walls of small blood vessels under the skin, resulting in blood leaking out into the body tissues beneath the skin, and manifesting as a bruise. If excessive bruising occurs due to minimal trauma or spontaneous bruising occurs, this could represent a blood clotting disorder. If you have spontaneous bruising and cannot recollect any significant trauma in that location, I would advise attending your family physician for a physical examination and routine blood tests including blood platelet level and coagulation profile. |
