Treating hot oil scald blister

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi. I dripped hot olive oil (straight out of a 240degree oven) on the top of my foot last night. The blister burst almost immediately leaving a 10p sized red sore which is leaking a clear fluid. What is the best treatment for fast healing? Avoiding infection?

Dear Nat: To treat a burn of this nature, you will need to do the following:

  • Apply a clean, dry dressing daily
  • Use an antibiotic ointment on the area
  • Monitor for signs of infection such as a green discharge, foul-smelling discharge, swelling or fever

Following these simple measure will ensure adequate healing. Should you notice any signs of infection, see your physician immediately.
