Low back pain after playing basketball

Dear Ask The Doctor: I jammed my hip playing basketball and felt fine until the next morning. I have severe soreness and pain in the lower back on one side with the pain moving into the quad and hamstring. Is there a way I can pop it out like a jammed finger? Or is there a way I can stretch it out. I've been putting ice on both areas for the last several days and it is really painful and iratating when I sit for long periods of time. Especially when I drive

Dear Thomas:  According to your description of the symptoms you might most likely experiencing a Post traumatic Trochanteric Bursitis. The trochanteric bursa has superficial and deep components. The superficial bursa lies between the tensor fascia lata (lateral muscle of the hip and upper thigh) and the skin; the deep bursa is located between the greater trochanter (lateral part of the femur) and the tensor fascia lata. Walking or lying on the affected side exacerbates the pain. In the seated position, also the pain is present. The conservative treatment for acute post-traumatic bursitis is usually: relative rest, avoiding painful movements, you can practice alternate types of exercise activities that eliminate painful motions, for example: Swimming may help rather than hurt. Ice is a very effective anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving agent. Small ice packs, such as packages of frozen vegetables or water frozen in foam coffee cups, applied to the area for about 10 minutes at least twice a day may help decrease inflammation. Medications such as anti-inflammatories (“Motrin”, “Aleve”) may be helpful to reduce pain and swelling. If after following these conservative measures, you have poor or no improvement of the pain and limitation I strongly recommend you an assessment by a Sports medicine specialist.
