What is the survival rate of bowel cancer that has spread to the liver?

Dear Ask The Doctor: What is the prognosis for bowel cancer that has spread to the liver

Dear Mary: Prognosis of bowel cancer is determined by the histology, morphology and the stage of the tumor. Prognosis for young patients especially those under 30 is worse. Also a high CEA level indicates a worse prognosis.

A Stage I cancer has a 5 year survival of >90% whereas a Stage IV (where cancer has spread elsewhere) there is a 5% 5 year survival.
