High blood sugar levels before surgery

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have breast cancer; and I had a bilateral mastecomy in 2008. I am having a hysterecomy on Thursday of this week, and I just recieved a letter from the doctor that states my sugar is high, and I need a medical clearance. I have a doctor's appt. tomorrow at 10:45, and would this give me enough time for the doctor to release me for the surgery?

Dear Sherri: It is difficult for me to tell whether you will be cleared for surgery or not. All I can tell you is that high pre-operative sugar levels can increase the risk of developing blood clots, infection, renal failure and even death. I would advise you to consult with your doctor for ways i which you could control your blood sugar levels before surgery.
