Dear Ask The Doctor: I recently had a CT scan showing a irregular polumunary nodule in the lower right lobe. Also hilar lymphendaphany were discovered. My question is just because there is enlarged lymph nodes does that mean it is cancer? Everything on the internet points to this. I am very scared. Don't meet with pulmonologist until Wed. Thanks
Dear Travis: Hilar lymphadenopathy with enlarged lymph nodes does not mean that you have cancer. There are several causes of hilar lymphadenopathy. Sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, fungal disease, pneumoconiosis may also be responsible for enlarged lymph nodes. It would require further evaluation and tests by your pulmonologist to determine the diagnosis. Your doctor may advise for a complete blood count, a bronchoscopy and even a lymph node biopsy to make a diagnosis. Treatment will depend on the cause. I wish you well, take care. |
