Dear Ask The Doctor: I have a WBC of 13.5, my neut abs say 9,10 and my mono abs are at 1.10, I got these results from the hospital emergency room and I am wondering what are possible problems that occur with these results? Someone told me it could have something to do with cancerous cells, is that true?
Dear Siobhan: An elevated white blood cell count often represents the presence of infection or inflammation (e.g. bacterial infections, inflammation, trauma, intense exercise, or stress) and less commonly is associated with the presence of leukaemia. The high neutrophil count, in addition to the elevated white blood cell count, is most likely associated with an acute infection, probably bacterial in origin. These values should return to normal, on resolution of the acute infection. |
