Many abnormal smear test results |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I have had 7 smear tests and bi opsies to date with 6 month space between each one all results show abnormal cells present however during each scope and magnafication doctor sees no abnormalities whats happening Dear Mary: I realize how concerned you are about your repeated abnormal Pap smears with negative Colposcopies. An abnormal Pap smear means that the cells of your cervix have shown some slightly abnormal changes. Some abnormal cells are more likely than others to be cancerous. In my opinion you might had what is called ASC-US which means Atypical Squamous Cells with "uncertain significance". Â Although some of your cells are not normal, we might not know why the cells changed or what impact it will have on you. These changes are usually not serious and may be also caused by a vaginal infection or infection with a virus called HPV (human papillomavirus). This would be the reason that your doctor may want to do follow-up examinations such as your repeated Pap smears or HPV testing. Since your repeated smears and biopsies came back with the same results, your doctor might want to rule out other possible causes of irritation such as infections and he or she might want to prescribe antibiotics and further evaluation. On the other hand changes generally take years to be noticed so waiting a few months is unlikely to make a difference, even in the worst case scenario. I suggest you to comply with your Pap smear at least once a year. I wish you the best. |
