Leep procedure |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I had an abnormal pap smear result when I was 2months pregnant. My doctor performed a coloscopy when I was 5 months pregnant and she said she saw an area that concerned her. Six weeks after giving birth she did a biopsy, taking six samples stating that most likely she would have to do some kind of treatment. However, the results came back negative for HPV or cancer ut she wants to still do a leep procedure. Is this normal or should I get a second oppinion? Dear Tory: I realize how concerned you might be about your probable cervical changes. Usually after an abnormal Pap smear a series of diagnostics tests are made to rule out changes in the cervix such as Colposcopy or cone biopsy. Usually if the results of these tests are negative, your doctor might put you in observation with PAP smears every 6 months to a year. However if your doctor is still suspicious, he or she might want to use the Leep procedure to cut and obtain a more wide section of your cervix. This technique allows your physician to send the excised tissue to the lab for further evaluation which insures that the lesion was completely removed, as well as allowing for a more accurate assessment of the abnormal area. This procedure has its own complications; if you are uncertain about this technique I would suggest you to have a second opinion since you already have negative biopsies and HPV. |
