Dear Ask The Doctor: My mother who is 64 has recently been diagnosed with anal cancer. following cat scans pet scans and mri, she has cancerous lymph nodes on one side of her groin and there is a hot spot on her liver. what stage of cancer would this be do you think
Dear Olga: Staging of anal cancer is usually classified under the TNM staging system. T refers to the tumour size or invasion of adjacent structures, N refers to lymph node positive disease, and M refers to distant metastases (spread to other body organs). To give a full staging assessment the specifics of the tumour size and invasion must be known, but the current stage is N+ and M+. I would advise discussing treatment options with your mother’s gastroenterologist, with accurate staging, which allows for a specific prognostic evaluation to be made, in your mother’s case. |
