Why do lymph nodes enlarge?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have had 3 swollen lymoh nodes in my neck for 5 years. I have had two bouts of cellulits 1 in 2004 and 1 in 2006 I was wondering if these lymph nodes can remain permanently swollen or if there is a chance that I may have lymphoma?
Dear Luke:I think it is highly unlikely that your lymph nodes would remain enlarged 4 years after a bout of cellulitis. Lymph nodes may enlarge for a variety of reasons including; localised or systemic infections; systemic diseases; medications; and benign or malignant disease (eg lymphoma). When these lymph nodes enlarge they become swollen and easily palpable. It is important to fully investigate the cause of the lymph node enlargement; therefore I would advise attending your family physician or haematologist urgently for a detailed history, clinical examination, routine blood work and possible biopsy (tissue sampling) of these nodes, to determine the cause of the enlargement. |
