Lump on my lower leg

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have a doctors appointment coming up but am loosing sleep over a lump I have about 2 inches above my ankle on the outside of my leg, close to my shin. it is about the size of a quarter, it moves easily and is a rubbery consistency. It is tender to touch, and sometimes I feel some numbness or pressure in my foot. The lump can't be seen but it can be felt fairly easily. I keep reading that most lumps on legs are benign, but all I can find online points to soft tissue sarcomas. Is this likely malignant, or is there something else it could be?

Dear Kerri: The only way to get a definitive answer to your questions is by performing a biopsy, and the pathologist when examine the tissue under the microscope will determine the exact nature of the lump. According to your description it may correspond to a benign “lump”, but the ultimate answer is the biopsy.
