Lung cancer and asbestos |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My mum died of lung cancer 4 years ago, she was a smoker, but her and my step father knocked a chimney breast down in my bedroom about 7 years before her diagnoses. It was an old council house so there is a high chance it conained asbestos, I'm concerned that this added to the cause of her death and I'm petrified that I might be at risk of having the same fait. What can I do to put my mind at ease? Will my GP take my concerns seriosly? Dear Michelle: P Lung cancer is one of the most common types mortal cancers in the U.S. Certainly people who smoke have the greatest risk of lung cancer. The risk of lung cancer increases with the length of time and number of cigarettes smoked. This is one of the most important risk factors and is well known that a person who quits smoking would decrease the risk within the next few years. I agree with you that exposure to Asbestos would multiple the risk of developing Lung Cancer, but this would increase even more if the person exposed to asbestos is also a smoker. A thorough physical examination, including a chest x-ray and lung function tests, may be recommended. The chest x-ray is currently the most common tool used to detect asbestos-related diseases. However, it is important to note that chest x-rays cannot detect asbestos fibers in the lungs, but they can help identify any early signs of lung disease resulting from asbestos exposure. I wish you the best. |
