Kidney cancer staging and prognosis |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: MY SISTER N LAW HAS CANCER IN BOTH KIDNEYS.AND BOTH KIDNEYS HAS TO BE REMOVED.HOW LONG CAN SHE LIVE. Dear CHARILSE: Kidney cancer is usually Renal cell carcinoma which is an adenocarcinoma in pathology. There are various stages of Renal cancer and the prognosis usually depends on the staging. Stage 1: The tumor is less than 7 cm in size and is confined to the kidney : Prognosis (survival rate )- 90-100% at 5 years ir 90 to 100% of the patients with this stage will be alive at 5 years since. Stage 2: The tumor is more than 7 cm but is also confined to the kidney : Prognosis: approximately 60% at 5 years Stage 3: The tumor has invaded the renal vessels or nearby vessels but is not extending beyond the kidney capsule: Prognosis- 60 % at 5 years Stage 4: The tumor has moved beyond the kidney capsule: Prognosis: 0-20% at 5 years. Also it depends upon whether the tumor has infiltrated the lymph nodes or the distant organs. Since she is having both her kidneys removed this would either necessitate a renal transplant or she would have to be on dialysis for the rest of her life which may also affect her survival rate. I hope this helps. |
