Do I have Thyroid Cancer?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Thank you for your time. I have 4 masses on my thyroid measuring 6.9x2.2x1.9cm, 5.9x1.9x1.5cm, and 5mm. The other ones are not measured. The lady that did the sonogram said that I had too many little masses to worry about measuring all of them. I have gained 75 pounds in the last year and a half, however all my thyroid tests have come back normal. TSH 1.080 T4, Free 1.39. My masses are Heterogeneous echo-texture. Minimal echogenicity in the wall of the dominant lesion may represent early calcification. Also they are Hypo-echoic. I also have a new mass on the outside of my skin that has popped up over a month ago. My primary gave me antibiotics that did not help at all. My fear, of course, is thyroid cancer. With all the things that I have read online I am worried. I am also worried that an FNA is not always correct and a lot of doctors will want to wait and watch the masses before they do anything. Side note: I had an ultrasound on my thyroid two years ago and only had 2 masses. Please any advise, good or bad, would be appreciated.
Dear Bethany: Based on your ultrasound findings, I am almost certain that you have a multinodular goitre. This is a benign condition i.e NOT thyroid cancer. FNAC will confirm the diagnosis of multinodular goitre as multiple masses can be biopsied during the procedure. As your thyroid function seems to be normal based on your blood results, there is no need to remove the thyroid unless for cosmetic reasons. |
