|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I have only just turned 15 and have got swollen lymph nodes in my neck and groin, In my groin their are quite alot of them also There is a very large one about the size of a marble on my jaw line by my throat, they seem painless and i am very worried that it could point to cancer, also i am having no other symptons of lymphoma (tiredness, night sweats, fatigue etc.) please help as i am very worried Dear James: Common causes of enlarged lymph nodes are infections, virus, malignancy or lymphoma. Also during this growth phase in your life, normally the lymph nodes feel enlarged due to an active lymphatic system, so if the if the nodes are small (less than 2 cm), this is considered normal. But if you feel symptoms like tiredness, weight loss, fever, night sweats, itching, breathlessness, infections that keep coming back or if the skin overlying these nodes is red, painful or the nodes grow rapidly, you should consult your doctor for further assessment of these nodes by blood tests, Xrays or CT scans. Biopsy of the node may be needed to determine the cause of the swelling.
