Chronic loose stool since 3 months

Dear Ask The Doctor: My mom (60 yr old) had stomach and colon cancer. She did a colon surgery about 1 year ago. She did the CT scan 3 months ago and no recurrence was found. But just couple weeks after the exam, she and her friends ate something not clean, and everyone started to have diarrhea. Everyone's fine after a few days, but my mom is still having the loose stool even after almost 3 months now. But she doesn't have abdominal pain, just chronic loose stool. What could be the cause? And what should she eat?
Dear Gordon: In my opinion your mom needs to consult her treating doctor to discuss about her chronic diarrhea, because it may be a side effect associated with her Xeloda medication. Diarrhea may commonly occur with this chemotherapy medication and her symptom of chronic diarrhea definitely needs to be reported to her doctor. On the other hand diarrhea due to some infection may also last for long and may require antibiotics for treating the infection along with adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration. Liquid and semi solid foods may be best for easy digestion and absorption at this time.
