Breast Discharge without any lump in the breast: Is this cancer?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a thirty year old smoker. I noticed a few weeks ago my breast was leaking a colostrum like clear fluid, it seems to always be the same duct in my right breast, but I'm not pregnant. I haven't detected any lumps but my breasts are quite large, so a peas sized lump might be difficult to detect. I am very healthy and have no family history of any cancer. Could this be a sign of a malignancy?
Dear Megan: Breast nipple discharge is always considered as a important symptom and one that justifies further investigation. There can be many conditions which can lead to this some of which include cancer, intraductal papilloma etc. While this could be a sign of malignancy we cannot rule in or rule out the same without further physical examination as well as a mammogram or an ultrasound. I would advice you to see a physician in person and get checked up as well as get further tests done if deemed necessary. All the best. |
