Dear Ask The Doctor: What is survival chances of Whipple procedure after discovery of cholangiocarcinoma followed by total pancreatectomy due to infection after first op? After 3 years of good recovery now have symptoms of malabsorption . White male 56years of age.
Dear Diane: The survival rate of cholangiocarcinoma varies according to the location fo the tumor and the stage at which it is discovered. It seems you had a periampullary tumor which is the type of cholangiocarcinoma that is treated with a Whipple's procedure. This type of cholangiocarcinoma usually has the highest survival rate for cholangiocarcinomas. The survival rate 5 years after diagnosis is between 30%-40%. That means that 30%-40% of persons are alive 5 years after diagnosis and treatment.
It is not uncommon for persons who have undergone a total pancreatectomy to have malabsorption symptoms despite taking replacement pancreatic enzymes. Since you were not having any symtpoms until recently, the onset of symptms may be related to changes in your diet. The dosages of your medications may need to be adjusted along with your diet to alleviate your symptoms. You should discuss this with your doctor further. |
