Dear Ask The Doctor: I am wondering whether or not I should insist on an excisional biopsy. I have had a swollen cervical lymph node for 7 months. It has waxed and waned, but doesn't get smaller than a grape. I have been extremely tired, am anemic, and have low iron (I'm sure related to anemia). I have had dozens of tests for something infectious (all negative) and today had a colonoscopy to test for Crohn's (also negative). My SED rate is ok. WBC ok. I also have had another swollen node appear right under my ear and a couple in my groin. FNA of node came back most likely reactive, but I can't find what it would be reacting to. Is excisional biopsy the next logical step, or should I go in a different direction and keep investigating a potential infection?
Dear Misty: If a fine needle aspiration study is inconclusive, an excisional biopsy is the next logical step to get a definite diagnosis. Please consult your family physician or surgeon in this regard. |
