Dear Ask The Doctor: For a long time now (like since I was a child and I'm 28 now) the top of my right arm has hurt a little whenever someone taps it etc. For the last few years ( I honestly dont remember how long but more than 4 say) I have this small pea-sized lump under my skin. It's slightly protruding and is reddish in colour. There looks like a blood vessel is running through it. It's painful when squeeze. It's probably a couple of centimetres in size. Sometime my upper arm gets like a sharp shooting pain, but not often. Overall this lump dooesnt bother me too much other than I dont know what it is. I went to the doctor a few years ago adn he said it looked like possibly a lesion but I never got it checked further (I have a slight phobia of doctors and dentists etc.) Could you give me any indication as to what this could be. It is visible on the top of my arm near my shoulder. Thanks
Dear Aisling: From what you have mentioned, the pea shaped lump that hurts when you squeeze could be a sebaceous cyst or a lipoma. Sebaceous cysts are formed when a hair follicle gets blocked created a sac like structure underneath the skin filled with sebum and keration. On its own sebaceous cysts are harmless and needs no treatment other than warm compress when it get inflammed. However there are times when this may get infected and become an abscess and will require drainage.
Lipomas are lump of adipose tissue in the skin which are benign and do not warrant treatment unless for cosmetic reasons. |
