Dear Ask The Doctor: I have chronic wrist pain at the base of my hand where I rest my hand on my laptop when typing. It is making it very difficult for me to type which is critical to my livelihood. Should I get an xray and get a doctors opinion or do you have any advice to help with this condition?
Dear Colin: Your wrist pain could be caused by carpal tunnel syndrome or tenosynovitis. Both these conditions are treated conservatively. If this conservative treatment fails then the surgical option is employed. Conservative treatment involves the use of splints, pain medication, injection corticosteroids and physical therapy. Your doctor may be able to diagnose the problem with physical examination. An x-ray may be normal in most of the cases. |
