Hand Surgery Recovery Time

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello, I have had 2 operations in the last 2 weeks. I sustained a spiral fracture of the proximal phalange of my left ring finger and the initial opeartion, in which a K-wire was inserted, failed to secure the fracture, so a second operation was necessary - the open reduction and fixation op (3 screws). This took place on Thursday 15 March and the X-rays suggest that the op will be successful this time. The doctor / surgeon has signed me off work for a minimum of 2 weeks and I am on a double dose of antibiotics, plus painkillers. Could you please tell me if it really necessary for me to abstain from work for the full 2 weeks, assuming that the pain wears off and my check-up goes well? I am fit and well in myself and under a great deal of pressure at work (school teacher, and Ofsted are in this week...); I am afraid that colleagues will think I am delaying my return to work on purpose. (Maybe I should be treated for paranoia too!?). Your advice would be appreciated, thankyou. Kat Robin PS My query isn't about carpal tunnel syndrome, but there wasn't a suitable category!
Dear Katrina: I suggest resting for two weeks as recommended by your surgeon. Remember you have already had a reoperation because the first procedure failed. It is best to allow the finger adequate time to heal before resuming full activity. Your doctor should be able to provide you with letter explaining your absence from work. |
