Dear Ask The Doctor: It has been a week and a half now since surgery in my left palm to remove a small finishing nail which was stuck inside. I have had numbness in my pinky and ring finger since surgery. In the last week i have gained back full motion but the fingers are still numb, though i have noticed alot of tingling sensation in the two numb fingers. Would this be a sign of healing and how long until i should begin to worry if the numbness does not go away? thanks Darren
Dear Darren: It is obvious you have suffered some degree of nerve injury. However, the severity of the injury is not clear. You have injured the ulnar nerve of one of its branchs which innervates the skin on the little and ring fingers. I suspect the nerve has not been completely severed and thus theres will likley make a full recovery. Recovery may take several weeks (6 or more) depending on the extent of the nerve injury. The tingling sensations you are experiencing are evidence of injury to nerve and not of recovery. |
