Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and de Quervain Syndrome, but the workers comp orthopedic Dr all of a sudden doesn't want to do surgery, and wants me to go back to work, no restrictions, just 'to see what happens'. I was wondering if I should see a neurologist or what, as I am still in pain, and it's been over a year. This doctor was chosen by my employer.
Dear Angela: Both these conditions are treated conservative (non-surgically) when first encountered. If this conservative treatment fails then the surgical option is employed. Conservative treatment involves the use of splints, pain medication, injection corticosteroids and physical therapy. If you have already had conservative treatment and still suffer from significant pain then you are a candidate for surgery. You will need to get the opinion of another orthopedic doctor. A neurologist does not usually treat this condition. |
