Post Cataract Surgery - Reflecting Pupils and Unexpected Vision Change

Dear Ask The Doctor: My mother (age:70) had cataract surgery several weeks ago. She healed well. Still, I am concerned with a couple of things. One is when I look at her, the new lens seems to give her eyes an appearance like there's a tiny mirror in her eyes - like they are reflective or shiny. I haven't noticed her friends' eyes looking like that after their surgeries. It's a little unnerving to look at someone and their eyes suddenly become reflective. It seems to just be one at a time, but both do it. Is that common? The second, is she's commented that although her sight was much improved within the first 24 hours of surgery, it's now almost as bad as it was before surgery. Is that normal?

Dear Abbie: Your mother seems to have developed a complication from her surgery. Her vision should not have deteriorated this quickly. While there are several complications which could account for these symptoms, I am inclined to think that the implanted lens have been dislocated. This may explain the 'reflective pupils'. She will need to see her ophthalmologist to address these issues. Corrective surgery may be necessary.
