Are shiny eye's after Cataract Surgery normal?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello, My Grandmother recently had cataract surgery. Since the surgery, she feels as though her eyes are overall in much better shape, however she needs sunglasses whenever she goes outside, and her left eye is very shiny. It looks like a kaleidoscope. Her eyes are dry, itchy and shes worried to rub them. Shes very sensitive to the light. Is this something we should be concerned about?

Dear Elizabeth: Your grandmother may have suffered a complication of her cataract surgery and should see her ophthalmologist as soon as possible. it is possible that she has developed uveitis, which is inflammation of the middle layer of th eye. This often presents with the symptoms you have described among others such as eye pain. It requires prompt treatment to prevent further complications such as complete loss of vision. Please do not delay!
