Which Endoscopy with Biopsy for Celiac disease

Dear Ask The Doctor: T he GI specialist wants to do a colonospy w biopsy! Shouldn't this be a UGI w biopsy for celiac disease??? I was given a colonoscopy w biopsy prep sheet from the receptionist. This doc was a referral consult and I was given Colyte w flavor packs to take the night before for the month of(JUNE) I think there must be some misunderstanding as should this not be and UGI w biopsy for celiac disease. I am 29 with no rectal bleeding. I have had a pos lab result for celiac when I lived in my home State (MI) from my family Doctor. This specialist was from another country and was difficult to understand or communicate with for me. Is there any reason he would want to do this or perhaps there was th some misunderstanding with him or the receptionist??? Please Advise???

Dear Alexandra: The biopsy for celiac disease is usually a small bowel biopsy ie the duodenum and thus it should be done through upper GI endoscopy. There must have been some miscommunication on the part of the doctors office and thus I would advice you to reconfirm the same with them.
