Can i contract shingles?

Dear Ask The Doctor: HELLO, I AM 57 YRS OLD AND I HAVE, AS FAR AS I KNOW, NEVER HAD CHICKEN POX. MY COWORKER HAS SHINGLES. I AM CONCERNED THAT I MAY GET CHICKEN POX OR SHINGLES. WHAT CAN I DO TO NOT GET INFECTED. I HAVE BEEN USING LYSOL. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT HE HAS TOUCHED.

Dear Jeni: You can essentially contract the virus and develop chicken pox. The best way is to avoid DIRECT contact with the infected person. However it is important to remember that to develop shingles one has to have had chicken pox first. I hope this helps. All the best.
