How long is chickenpox contagious?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have chicken pox for 6 days now and I'm wondering if I can still spread it because they are dried now and are scabbing

Dear Joe Sam: Chickenpox is contagious 48 hrs before the rashes appear until all rashes are scabbed. This is also the time when viral replication is active. To answer your question, yes, there is still a chance others can acquire the infection from you, especially those who have not been vaccinated and/or are immunocompromised (weakly resistant immune system e.g very young, very old). I do hope I have answered your question and take care always.
