Dear Ask The Doctor: The question I have for you today is in regards to my 6 year old son. I've noticed more and more that it shis eyes almost look like they are black. The other thing is that under his fingernaild and his toe nails, they look to be purple. And he was that they are sore. So my question is, do you have any suggestions as to what may be causing this? And if so what can I do about it? Dear Kati: The dark coloration of the fingernails and toes could indicate cyanosis, which is caused due to a lack of oxygen in the blood. Problems with the lungs include pneumonia, asthma. Congenital heart disease could also cause similar symptoms. It is important to take your son to see a pediatrician to rule out an underlying heart or lung problem. |
