Dear Ask The Doctor: My son is always sick and every doctor tells me he is getting viral infections. For the past six months he has only not had a fever maybe three days of the month. I was reviewing his blood work from a year ago and found some interesting things but I cannot understand them A) His MCV came back high with 88 B) His MPV came back low at 7.1 C) His ABSOLUTE MONOCYTES came back very high with 1485 D) His Hemoglobin A1 came back low at 95.3 E) His Hemoglobin F came back 2.5 high His doctor never told me about any of this I only found out because I got his medical records released to me when I started looking for new medical care. What does all this mean ??? thank you, Helpless in Maryland
Dear Brittany:A mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of 88 is normal, mean platelet volume (MPV) is a measure of the average size of platelets, so if this value is low, it does not mean that platelets are not functioning, just that they are smaller than normal and is of limited significance. Monocytes are white blood cells, and this level would be expected to be high in an acute infection. HbF (fetal hemoglobin) normally switches to adult haemoglobin at 3-6 months of life, but may make up approx 3% of adult hemoglobin. A low HbA1 may just represent anaemia. I would question the significance of these results if they were performed 1 year ago. Interpretation of blood results must be correlated with patient history, physical examination and past medical history. If you have further concerns I suggest consulting a haematologist |
