Adolescent Height Growth |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi! I am a Chinese female at 16 years old, 5 foot 2, and 107 pounds. Both my parents are 5 foot 6. I entered puberty about 4 years ago, but I have not had a growth spurt. I eat many fruits and vegetables and get about 8 hours of sleep each night. 1)What are some possible reasons that I am not growing? 2)Is there anything I can do to increase my rate of growth, like eating vitamins? I have heard that doing certain activities can help to increase the release of human growth hormones. Is this true? 3)Both my mom and my aunt were 5 foot 4 in high school and then grew to 5 foot 6 later in college. Is it possible that I will to continue grow a few more inches? Thanks! Dear Sophie: i understand your worry about short stature; you still have approximately a couple more years to increase your height. I would like you to understand that short parents tend to have short children. If a doctor finds you have no growth disorder and you're growing steadily and sexually maturing at the usual expected age, then you can probably expect to grow to a normal size, although you may be somewhat shorter than average. Growth hormone is released on the onset of the deep sleep and also during fasting states. If you want to increase in height, you can always consult an endocrinologist for an evaluation of your hormones and a more detailed opinion on your chances to increase your height. |
