Headache in children |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My daughter is 8 years old she has had a very bad headache for the last three days which wont go away. It is accompanied by a sore throat and she has recently got over a cold. she is quite poorly with it. what could be causing this headache? Dear Sarah: I comprehend how worried you are about your daughter’s condition. Headaches are a common symptom that is usually present with viral infections such as an upper respiratory infection like Flu or cold. After reading your description, your daughter’s might have probably a viral cold, acetaminophen might help her reducing her symptoms and the symptoms would remit in a few days. However if by the next 3 to 5 days the headache persists or increases in intensity and is accompanied by irritability and explosive vomits, I would definitely suggest you to consult your pediatrician to rule out a possible Meningitis which can sometimes be a complication of viral or bacterial respiratory infections. Antibiotics might need to be started soon if the entity is bacterial. I wish her a prompt recovery. |
