Dear Ask The Doctor: My 11 year old daughter was diagnosed with Myositis, is this fatal?
Dear Angela: There are several types of Myositis: ossificans, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, drug-induced myositis. Basically, in general, for all types, Myositis is a disease that cause inflammation and degeneration to the muscular tissue. Women are more affected than men. The diagnosis is often complicated and different tests( muscle biopsy, blood tests for elevated levels of muscle enzymes and antibodies, MRI, electromyography) and examinations are required to make an accurate diagnosis in order to start treatment as soon as possible. Some research studies show that the mortality rate after several years with the disease is approximately 15%, but also some research studies found that approximately 20% of cases of Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis may respond to the treatment and remain asymptomatic or “in remission” for long periods of time. The outcomes depend in part on the speed of diagnosis and treatment and the type of myositis. |
