Dear Ask The Doctor: My 4 year old son has been diagnosed with croup 5 times in the space of 9 months, is this normal? He is also asthmatic. Last night I had him up at the local GDocs and was told there is a high chance he is suffering from croup again, will now be the 6th time last time being just 5 weeks ago, however they didn't give him steroids this time as they weren't a hundred percent sure that it is definitely croup again. Is there anything I can do to help him? I was advised to steam him however I can't do this as the steam irritates my asthma
Dear Samantha: Unfortunately like most viral infections we get, croup is not cureable and your son could keep getting it. I would suggest getting a cool mist humidifier as this helps sometimes as well and unlike the hot steam, may not bother his asthma too much. Also try and use using a fever reducer (somethign whcih contains acetaminophen or ibuprofen). I hope this helps....one more thing you can ask your family doctor about is there is a newer treatment that is being researched using a mixture of oxygen and helium to help children with severe coup. |
