Dear Ask The Doctor: My daughter's had a fever since Friday. It comes and goes however on Monday it would not let down. We finally took her to the hospital and they told us she has the Flu. They perscribed Tamiflu however advised that it may not work because it had to be administered 48hrs after the first symptoms. It is now Wednesday and she continues to have high fevers of 100 in addition to stomach pains, coughing, sneezing, runny nose and eyes, and purpulish lips? Is this the common flu? Should i take her to the hospital again?
Dear Jeanette: It seems that your daughter may have the Flu. I agree with the doctors at the hospital that Tamiflu may not work because it was administered after 48hrs of the symptoms starting. The symptoms you describe are typical of Flu which are high fevers, coughs, generalised myalgias and feeling unwell. However since you mention that she has purpulish lips that concerns me as she may be having cyanosis ( decreased oxygen in the blood due to difficulty breathing ) . I however cannot give you a specific diagnosis without seeing her. But I would advice you that in case she is not improving or getting worse, having difficulty breathing, is lethargic and has a worsening appetite I would take her back to the hospital to get it checked out. It also could be a pneumonia that we may be missing.
The symptoms of flu generally last for about a week after which the child starts feeling better. In the mean time please keep her hydrated, use tylenol/ Advil for the fevers, saline gargles . |
