Dear Ask The Doctor: My daughter has had a fever ranging from 99 degrees to 102 degrees for over four days now. We took her to the doctor and they told us there was nothing they could do for her. She had some vomiting on night two, but has otherwise kept food down. She is constantly complaining about her stomach hurting as well. We have been using Motrin to control the fever, but have been unable to totally get rid of it. What should we do at this point?
Dear Christopher: It seems that your daughter may have caught some kind of Viral infection causing a stomach flu. At this point you want to keep her hydtrated since she had some vomitting . Keep giving her clear fluids( no citrus juices), ginger ale, saltine crackers can help. Also give her small easy to digest meals. You can try following the BRAT diet ie Banana, Rice , apple and Toast. Motrin is fine for the fever. Usually a stomach flu should run its course over 7 days and then subside. However if she gets worse( lethargic, excessive stomach pain, very high fevers) or is not improving I would advice to take her back to the physician for a more thorough check up and/or tests. |
