Dear Ask The Doctor: My son is 5 years old, He has Tonsillitis, He gets fever, sore throat with white patches every other month, since last year, His Doctor sugests Tonsillectomy. Shall we wait for few more months hoping to still improve his condition or go for Tonsillectomy?
Dear Pratima: Tonsillitis is acute inflammation of the tonsils which is usually due to streptococcal and sometimes viral infections and is treated by antibiotics. Tonsillectomy is usually carried on when despite adequate treatment and prevention tonsillitis occurs frequently. Since you son has been getting these episodes every other month since the last one year , I woul also suggest a tonsillectomy. While there are chances that he might grow out of getting these infections there is no gaurantee and thus a tonsillectomy would be the best choice. It is a failry simple and common operation with few and limited complications.
More over from his medical history I also see that he has enlarged adenoids which cause him to snore and droll and also may be causing him to breathe with an open mouth. You could try homeopathy however I would not be able to comment on the efficacy of the same .Wish you all the best. |
