|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My son is 3 yrs old. He is very happy and healthy. At night he coughs ALOT. less in the day but most at night. It will go away .....and come back 2 weeks later. His tonsils are and always have been very large. HIs chest is fine. so what would this be? He soemtimes throws up flem at night from coughing......he doesn't get a good sleep because of it.....and I am getting very concerned since it goes and comes back all the time. It use to follow with a fever but not anymore. Again he is a very happy ....hyper....lovable boy who eats and plays as he should.......is this common is there a name for it? what is causing it? his tonsils? I was told it is ashma but I know it isnt. Dear Vanessa: Large tonsils are commonly seen in children under the age of 6. Normally the tonsils start to shrink after 6 years of age and the symptoms that appeared due to the size of the tonsils, like sleep disturbance, difficulty breathing or due to its infection, and inflammation like cough, pain, difficulty in swallowing, fever etc. will eventually reduce. If you notice that his symptoms are getting severe, then you should seek help immediately. You may want to consult an ENT specialist to consider treatment options including tonsillectomy (not preferred until age 4), and measures for preventing the symptoms.
