Spleen laceration and risk of flying

Dear Ask The Doctor: My son who is 6 years old a few weeks ago had a sledding accident. He lacerated his spleen and had internal bleeding. His father is wanting to take him on spring break, flying from Michigan to Florida. Is it safe for my son to be flying? I have thought about blood clots and communicable diseases. He is currently pretty healthy but has been sick with colds and the flu since his accident. I am concerned he may be more prone to further injury such as a blood clot or getting ill since his white blood cells were low. Do I have any reason to be concerned or am I just being over protective?
Dear Mindy: A spleen laceration is a serious diagnosis. Typically the patient is advised extended bed rest for a few weeks with follow up on blood counts. However since he is only flying i dont assume that there would be a problem with that.A spleen laceration does not increase ones risk of developing blood clots but may affect immunity. Thus please advice him to avoid any sport especially contact sports for a few weeks and also take some precautions like frequent hand washing against infections. All the best. |
